DO YOU HEAR THE SILENCE? - Finally!
It
has been an extremely long wait but instructions were recently issued
by Canadian Pacific Railway for whistle cessation at Parkside Drive.
There are still the occasional whistles being blown, but over time this
too should stop altogether. In speaking with Canadian Pacific Railway
there may be some delay in all conductors receiving the bulletin, and
at times it may happen out of habit, or if there is something on the
track or in the area that requires the whistle to be blown. I will be
keeping in touch with an area resident to see how things progress.
If
you do have any concerns with the whistling you can either contact my
office or call directly to the railway "Community Connect" line at
1-800-766-7912.
Your patience with this issue has been greatly
appreciated. I would also like to pass along my thanks to David Sweet
our local Member of Parliament for his interest in this issue and his
assistance with making inquiries with Transport Canada which helped
move things along, as well as City staff members Ed Switenky, Rob
Galloway, Don Fisher, Ron Sabo and Adam Sweedland.

Elimination of the Parkside Train Whistle
The
required steps for the elimination of the train whistle at Parkside
Drive are progressing nicely. The Safety Report commissioned by the
City has now been completed and a report will be prepared by staff
recommending support for the anti-whistling by-law, with suggested
safety recommendations to be implemented, for the July 12, 2006
Committee of the Whole meeting. It is anticipated that the Canadian
Pacific Railway will agree with the recommendation and it is my goal to
have the whistle eliminated by the end of the summer and perhaps
earlier if at all possible.
