Information Provided by Don Hull, City of Hamilton Director of Transit, May 25, 2006
Some
level of Transit service to all urban areas of the new city of Hamilton
is a priority of Staff and Council. Council's Service Standards
guidelines for Transit would suggest a minimum service level of at
least peak period service from Monday through Friday serving the urban
area of Waterdown. Implementation of basic commuter and
basic local services to Waterdown is among the highest priorities from
a Staff perspective. The Transit Steering Committee will be developing
a 2007 service enhancement plan over the next few months for Council's
consideration in their 2007 budget deliberations. Staff will be
presenting a list of potential candidates for implementation in 2007 as
part of this process and the creation of an introductory service to
Waterdown will be on our list of priorities. Area rating,
however, remains an outstanding potential obstacle to the
re-introduction of Transit service to Waterdown that needs to be
resolved by Council. It is not yet clear how the introduction of
service to Waterdown would be funded. There are three options: 100%
funded by Waterdown ratepayers through area rating, 100% funded through
Provincial Gas Tax, or some combination of the two.
